ANGELS INDOORS 2001/2 SEASON
"Los Angeles" @ Indoor Open Qualifiers, Feb 2002
Overall, the performance given by the A team last weekend was probably the most convincing of the season. We began our pool games by playing Mohawks 2, second-from-bottom seeds in our pool. This easy start gave us opportunity to fine-tune our isolation offence and zone defence. We stuck to our game plan, and, although they probably scored a couple of points that they shouldn't have scored because of the odd lapse of concentration on our part, it was a good way to begin the tournament. The score? 13-3 to the best of my memory.
Slurrey Slingers provided a slightly different kind of challenge. They had developed a specific style of play and although they didn't have a gameplan as such, they were a more determined unit. We let them make a quick start, allowing them to score the first point. Even after we got off the mark and established a convincing margin, we looked a little tepid, allowing them to exploit the holes in our zone defence. However, they were never able to pose a real threat, and their poor defence showed their inexperience. I think the final score was 10-4.
Playthings were always going to provide us with the toughest challenge of the day. They had a strong team, and their co-option of Sven and Jaison provided the match with a healthy dose of friendly rivalry. They played with more structure and experience than any of the other teams we'd encountered. Fortunately for us, they failed to live up to their own expectations. We played hard man-defence to shut down their flow, and we were quick to take advantage of their mistakes. Our offence was solid, and they had no answer to our isolation play. The score finished 9-4 as far as I remember. (Sven and Jaison, I await your eager corrections if I've got this wrong)
This victory virtually secured us 1st place in our pool. The game against Bad Habits 2 was more or less a formality, although I would be a slack hack if I failed to mention that we gave a pristine demonstration of style of play I like to call "muppet ultimate" in this game.
Sunday
Our quarter final was against Strange Blue I, who have won this tournament two years running, beating us in the final and semi-final in 2001 and 2002 respectively. They fielded a weaker team than they have done to this tournament in previous years, but they still could have caused an upset, as their victory over Night Fever later on in the day demonstrated. We were determined to win this game but we weren't intimidated by the history of our previous encounters. Our defensive strategy worked, and we were pretty merciless when it came to taking advantage of the basic handling errors they made. Occasionally, our offence became too trigger-happy, but generally, when we turned over, we were quick to set up on defence. I can't remember the exact score (10-4??), but the margin was convincing.
This set us up for a semi-final against Playthings, who were determined to reverse the result of Saturday's pool play. They started the game strongly, tying the score 2-2 before we started to pull away. Both teams mixed up their defence: Playthings set up a zone which we played through confidently; we combined our standard zone with man-on. The game was closer than our earlier contest, but we were convincing winners, the final score being something like 8-4. (for corroboration/vehement correction, please feel free to consult Sven and Jaison, official spokesmen for the Free Ultimate Players of North London Association).
No.1 seeds Yo Mama proved to be our opponents in the final after making their semi against Hammerage look like a warm-up game. We traded points in a dramatic first half, which saw Matt headbutt a wall in a desperate bid on defence. He was substituted by Mark Macdonald, who replied with an awesome lay-out D that was converted into a point. The game saw some spectacular handling by Andy and Sean and some equally spectacular takes from Si, Mark and Kim. For the majority of the game, there was little to choose between the two teams. Yet at the most crucial moments, Yo Mama were able to unsettle our offence with uncompromising defence that forced stallouts and throwaways which proved costly. Their experience of playing and winning important matches narrowly edged us out of a close and exciting game, which did justice to the talents of both teams. Final score: 13-11.
OK, that's enough of the facts. It's now time for my Carrie Bradshaw moment, where I sit at my laptop, wearing designer clothes that are worth more than the aforementioned computer, and use the small experiences of my friends to draw crass conclusions about how the universe works. Or rather, I'm going to say somethings about the tournament that don't necessarily relate to Ultimate. Firstly, nice job! Thanks to everyone (and that pretty much was everyone) who helped out with scoring, accomodation, running the bar, harrying the rec's staff, moving large pieces of furniture etc. - a fantastic team effort alround. Special mention should go to Sarah (Terry's fiance) who wasn't playing, but gave up most of her weekend to help out. Lastly but by no means least, well done to Simon, who, for the third year running has overseen proceedings at this event, and delivered a high-standard, fun tournament with something for everyone.

SATURDAY:
Once upon a time, in a land far far away, there was a beautiful princess, and a frog. The frog was called Gerald and liked flies. The princess lived in a tower, had long hair, choked on an apple, had a groovy hooded top (red), and a strange fetish for dwarfs and frogs, (not generally together tho). She was eventually arrested for bestiality and paedophilia which bears little relevance to anything.
Last weekend, not too far away, met a group of intrepid angels. Waking up at some unearthly hour they were off to a bad start, but things were to get better?.
The first game of the day saw an impressive display against surrey's nightfever. We took a leisurely approach not wanting to seem like bad hosts and although we played like true warrior saints, held them off for the first few points with a couple of Iso's and zone D, they seemed to find another gear and took the win 93. One of their team looked quite like Gerald.
Second game, Yo mama. What can you say? they won the weekend. We played hard, they played a bit harder, so eventually they just about came through 112. It was close, (¿) but to be fair they wanted the disk more ? and the points we did score were well played ?no swill here. No Gerald look alikes, but dopey, grumpy and doc played quite well.
Third game against bad habits. No comment! Well actually a few. But they're censored. We was robbed!
Thus we ended in 4th place in our pool. A respectable position if only there had been another 10 people in the list!
After our morning spent weeding out the lesser teams that had lots of subs and people that ran too fast, we decided to step up our play. Surrey II, some other team (sorry forgot), and the other angels team(!) were completely baffled by our house drop to zone, our iso's, darrens left handed hammers, and the points just kept coming. (honest)
It was at this stage that the fake stack ISO's really started coming together nicely. It was now a target to get everyone to lay out? Blood ended up on the floor first for (I think) an 'interesting' iso pass recovery! Followed shortly by a few more... Could the 1st team please note how to lay out without leaving blood everywhere and damaging the brickwork!! (sorry matt and dunx!) Kathy scored a good percentage of our next few points by stealth offence? (something sean was trying to teach me? interesting play)
Mohowks II were our downfall of the afternoon. Somehow they kept their stamina and simply outran us. We played more skilfully, but the redbulls had worn off that bit too soon. They knocked us below our counterparts in the 'y' playoffs. Mutter?.grrr
And then came the Angels vs Angels game? Well they played ok I suppose(!) We won the toss (I'm good at that(!)) and they pulled to us. Within about 10 seconds we'd scored our first point thanks to a fake stack with char and blood.? perhaps a little too quick for the scoreboard to notice??¿¿¿!! The final score reflected how close we were matched.. OR DID IT???? Video analysis may have revealed an anomaly. Not wishing to cast aspersions, and this to be confirmed by our video referee, but maybe, just maybe, with the depravation of your spare sub and particularly blonde jonathan bloke, we might just have BEATEN YOU 43. (TBC)!!!! -Grudge match tonight?!!
INTERMISSION.
The evening's entertainment was extremely entertaining. The music and the company were superb. No idea what the rest of you did tho!
SUNDAY:
After our 7 games previous we were that little bit tired, but we were gonna beat those bad habit people this time! With the presence of blood in the middle, Christians pace, charmeynes (I was gonna say sticky fingers but that doesn't sound right ?very sorry)? catchingabilityness, um? I've lost this paragraph.
We were two points up in no time. A couple of point blocks, lots of house D, a few different O's, we were on form. Darrens LH hammer continued to confuse me, and luckily their defence just as much, and it looked like 13th place was ours. Unfortunately bad habits then introduced their secret weapon: another 4 subs. By the end of our 18 minutes of glory our pace had lowered, our one sub wasn't enough to keep us sprinting, and though a valiant effort, our play was not enough. We ended up 14th of 18. The princess was lost, and Gerald would be, forever a frog. But had a lot of fun, our play improved dramatically by the end, and I always find it hard to think of a third point to complete a sentence. So I wont.
THE END

London League: Angels 16 - 17 Freak Show
After a break of several weeks it was the first game of round 2 of the London League and, after a rusty start, we carried on right where we'd left off - playing quality ultimate. It seems to be our style to take a few points to warm up and then play consistently well whatever the ebbs and flows of the rest of the game.
We scored first but then started to fall behind. There was no major problem with us, we just weren't quite connecting. Our D was ok but there was always one gap and they always ended up scoring. On O against their junk defence we had handlers playing out of position which meant we couldn't get anything consistent going and people kept getting stranded with the disc. After a timeout this got better but we still finished the half 3-8 down.
But actually we were always close to clicking and after the break it kicked in and we started getting the points and the D's that we were always close to. Under pressure their O turned the disc over and we now took their zone D apart in the time-honoured sensible manner before striking when the opportunity presented itself. We scored from all ranges, a few hucks, some mid-rangers, and quite a few walk-ins.
Once we got within 2 it evened out and we traded til they had 2 match points on 12-14. We scored and turned them over to score again. Then we got 2 of the next 3 to go 16-15 up. [in the League you have to win by 2 but hard cap is at 17] They tied it up and in sudden death we started on O, seemed to freeze, turned it over at our end and they scored.
Shame to lose but it was a good game and a perfect summer league evening, good weather, good pitches, good ultimate, good opposition, good spirit and plenty of time for beer.
